L’eremo di San Leonhard
The Hermitage of St Leonhard

Situated in secluded natural surroundings just a few minutes from the sanctuary is the Hermitage of St Leonhard. A real hidden gem built in neo-Romanesque style, it marks the spot where the Virgin appeared to Leonhard Weissensteiner. The altarpiece inside was created by a local artist called Hans Brunner. Downstairs you can find the hermit's cell, an excavated cave, which is today adorned with crucifixes, crowns, crosses and sacred writings.

The Chapel of St Leonhard

Starting from the sanctuary, head eastwards on path 4. After about twenty minutes you will reach the Leonhard Weissensteiner Chapel, which is where the sanctuary originated and where the Virgin is said to have appeared. A little further down is the hermitage, which is a charming little place that previously contained other small cells, several of which remain today. A few steps down from the hermitage you can see the small cavity in the rock, which Leonhard fell into in 1553. From the hermitage you can also enjoy an amazing view of the surrounding Dolomites, including the Catinaccio, Marmolada and Latemar.

La Grotta di Maria di Lourdes
Mary of Lourdes Grotto

The Mary of Lourdes Grotto is a ten-minute walk from the sanctuary. Parish priest Johann Giuliani ordered the construction of the small Marian Chapel at the end of the 19th century as part the Institute for the Protection of Children he had founded. Inside the chapel there is a reproduction of the Lourdes grotto made of tufa stone from the Trodena River. The grotto is adorned with statues of the Virgin Mary and Bernadette. The ceiling is decorated with 5 medallions depicting the 4 evangelists and their insignia with the Annunciation of the Virgin Mary in the centre. Definitely worth a visit.
