The Cathedral of the Dolomites
Dedicated to the Virgin Mary
Situated at an altitude of 1,550 m, the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Pietralba is the most cherished place of pilgrimage among South Tyroleans. Perched on the slopes of Monte San Pietro, the sanctuary overlooks the beautiful Val d'Ega. For this reason, it was renamed the Cathedral of the Dolomites and has radiated light on to the mountains and valley below for almost five centuries.
A Baroque jewel
Majestic, resplendent and brilliant white, the Baroque style of the sanctuary’s exterior architecture has a Germanic influence as does the interior structure featuring stucco, decorations and gilding. A wonder to behold.
The corridor of ex-votos
To access the basilica you go through the corridor of ex-votos, which contains over 4,000 painted and embroidered panels as well as drawings and photographs of thanksgiving to Mary for the grace and miracles granted.
The hermit's house
An oasis of peace and spirituality next to the old hermitage of St Leonhard. The Fathers of the Order of the Servants of Mary warmly welcome anyone who needs help to share the rich history of this holy place and find hospitality. Be welcome.
The hermit's refuge
Next to the hermitage, this shelter, once an old stable housing animals, has been transformed into a cosy place where pilgrims can find shelter and comfort during their visit. Here you can find a moment of peace and silence, taking refuge from the weather or simply taking a break to recharge your batteries.

From Nova Ponente to Pietralba
The circular route leading from Nova Ponente to the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Pietralba and back again is one of the best known pilgrimages. As it takes you through peaceful meadows and forests, you can embrace being at one with nature. This easy route is 11.8 km long and has an altitude difference of less than 500 m. Enjoyable from start to finish.
Pilgrims’ Path
The old pilgrims' path leading from Laives to the pilgrimage church is a wonderful hiking experience. The trail covers 11 km and has an altitude difference of 1,300 m, making it quite challenging. The first section of the route is somewhat steep along an asphalt forest road over the Franzenberg mountain to the chapel of St Peter (St. Peter am Kofel), the symbol of Laives. From here, the Way of the Cross path leads to Pietralba.
From Aldino to Pietralba
From the magnificent South Tyrolean village of Aldino, the sanctuary is 5 km away and can be reached by following the road through the woods to Malga Schönrast. From here, follow the signpost to Pietralba. Continue walking through the forest and you will soon reach the Cathedral of the Dolomites.
